Research Officer

At the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL), we’re seeking a Research Officer to join our Research, Policy and Advocacy Portfolio. The Research Officer will lead the design, implementation and reporting of a four-year applied research Youth Opportunity Compass project

Location: Fitzroy 

Job Type: Parental Leave (12 months fixed term) Permanent part-time (22.8 hours per week / 0.6 FTE)

About the role: 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the facilitation of workshops with stakeholders, including the design of workshop materials and processes. 
  • Assist in developing and promoting research outputs through presentations, publications, and policy contributions. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, upholding BSL values, safety standards, and continuous improvement practices. 
  • Contribute to maintaining data systems, coordinating surveys and interviews, and supporting research administration. 
  • Analyse and manage data using tools like Excel, Power BI, and SPSS, including extracting, cleaning, and visualising large datasets.

What we are looking for:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual who has a passion for supporting the mission of BSL and delivering excellence in your role.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone who has the following key skills and experiences:

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training 
  • Existing knowledge and/or the capacity to develop knowledge of the field of youth employment, including current issues and debates in research and policy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and meet deadlines. 
  • Research skills, including quantitative analysis (e.g. multivariate stats) and developing qualitative methods. 
  • Proficiency in research and data software (e.g. SPSS, NVivo, EndNote) and Microsoft Office tools.
